I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving filled with delicious food and joyous memories. I know I reflected on just how thankful I am for each and every one of you who made my photography business such a success this past year.

Now that the turkey has been gobbled up (get it? gobbled? ha!)  it’s time to set sights more seriously on the holiday season. There is nothing that makes a more timeless gift than the gift of custom photography! I’ve recently started offering gift certificates. Gift certificates make a great gift not only for Christmas but also for baby showers, new parents, first birthdays, friends, family, etc.  And because I am so thankful for the great support of so many wonderful, beautiful families I wanted to extend an extra special “Black Friday” offer to you all.

For one day only, you can purchase gift certificates for 50% off! So if you want to buy a gift certificate good toward $200 worth of products or services, it will only cost you $100! Seriously! Crazy deal, right? If you were considering a session or looking for a great, affordable gift this is the PERFECT time to make it happen.I promise you, you will not see a deal like this come out of my studio until at least next Black Friday, if ever!

To purchase your gift certificate, just go here, choose the denomination of your choice from the menu on the right and, upon checkout, enter the code BLACKFRIDAY2010 .

Gift certificates are mailed to the recipient, by default. If you would like the certificate sent to the billing address instead or would prefer it sent via email, please just annotate that in the comments area at checkout.

Now for the fine print:

Over the last few months, I’ve have the honor and privilege of working with some very beautiful and special families who have helped me develop my first personal project: The 2011 Naturally Nourished, Naturally Nurtured project.

If you are unfamiliar with personal projects, the idea is that taking on a project that is meaningful to me and also completely different from my “norm” will help inspire me and help me grow as a photographer. In this case, the project was also a way to give back to my community and to a cause that is meaningful to me. Inspired by another photographer, I decided to focus on breastfeeding families for my personal project.

As a retired La Leche League leader and former nursing Mom, I have seen the value and benefits that breastfeeding offers not only the baby but the parenting relationship and the whole family.  Since my last baby weaned two years ago, breastfeeding advocacy has been on my periphery: not something I’m involved in anymore but still something I feel passionate about. This project was a perfect way to meld my love of photography with my passion for breastfeeding advocacy in a new and different way.

As a personal project, I learned so much. It was surprisingly tricky to capture these sweeties nursing without distracting them or interfering. Even trickier was also working to get husbands or siblings to be engaged without completely distracting the nursling. The beautiful moments that every nursing Mom experiences daily can be difficult to capture in images because they are spontaneous moments! I learned so much and really appreciate the patience and willingness of each participating family to take this journey with me.

I hope you enjoy the beauty, serenity and love that pours out of these images. If they touch you, please consider purchasing a 2011 Wall Calender, a set of 12 Note Cards or a 2011 Accordion Calendar. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each item will be donated to La Leche League of the Woodlands, Texas. They make great gifts for childbirth educators, doulas, midwives and doctors, pediatricians, lactation consultants, etc.

October 15 is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day.  This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve walked through grief with friends whose children have been born still, who have suffered loss during pregnancy or shortly there after. So often friends and family don’t know what to say and so say nothing at all. For a family who has bonded with their sweet family member, they are changed forever. The experience of losing a child is felt on such a deep level and a family’s love for that child will always be strong. While it can be hard to know best how to navigate the emotional waters when a friend or family member loses a child, I believe every parent wants their child to be remembered in love. I think the worst thing we can do for those who have lost is to forget the life that was lost! On this day, we remember those precious souls no longer among us here on Earth.

For my fellow photographers, I want to use this as an opportunity to encourage you to consider volunteering your time with the amazing non-profit organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. If you have never heard of this organization, please click through on the link and read more about them. In short, it’s an organization that provides remembrance photography free of charge to families who are losing or who have lost infants during pregnancy, birth or shortly thereafter. While it may seem so painfully difficult to witness loss and grief as a photographer, imagine how impossibly painful it must be to be the family experiencing such a profound loss. While I’ve known people over the years who have regretted not having lovely or professional photos of their angel, I’ve never met a family who chose to arrange for photos and later regretted it! But during the loss, a family may be experiencing any or all of the stages of grief – they are in the LEAST appropriate emotional spot to be thinking ahead to what they may want or need down the line. Often a hospital nurse or staff member suggests the idea of NILMDTS services to a family who would have never considered the long term benefits of professional heirloom photos of their sweet child. This small act of compassion can change the way a family grieves and heals and can help  friends and acquaintances to remember this precious lost life.

NILMDTS offers several ways for people to volunteer their time:

1) For Photographers who have the skill and lighting equipment, please consider volunteering your time as an Affiliated Photographer.

2) For Photographers who may not yet have the skill or don’t currently own or have experience with artificial lighting, NILMDTS is in need of Assistant Photographer.

3) For those who possess qualified post-processing skills, consider volunteering to be a Digital Retouch Artist (DRA). This special volunteer position relieves the work of Affiliated Photographers so they can keep attending sessions without worrying about the time-consuming nature of retouching more visually challenging images.

4) For those who are not photographers but feel called to join in this amazing cause, consider becoming a Parent Coordinator.
