If you follow this blog or my Facebook page then you may have noticed that things have been pretty quiet in Photography-land. The reason for that is two-fold. First, in the spring I launched a new off-shoot of my photography business, PhotoBlogHelp.com offering website support to photographers. It took off pretty quickly and it’s work I really enjoy so that’s taken some time away from picking up the camera.

More than that, though, I’ve been struggling for the last few years to find the balance that all of us Mothers struggle to find. My children must come first but often times they don’t, I’m ashamed to admit. I have a son who is turning 17 this fall and I see the remnants of his childhood fleeting and I know I need to shift the balance back toward my children for awhile. Their childhoods will speed by and I’ll have the rest of my life to pursue my own career interests.

So I took a drastic step back this summer and stopped shooting sessions while I evaluated the direction of my business and life. And I’ve come to the conclusion that I really must focus on my birth photography business and my family. I’m not “retiring” from sessions forever but I am taking a real step back and putting some severe limits on the number, type and location of sessions I’ll accept going forward. I’ve also restructured my session and product pricing completely to reflect these changes.

Finally I would like to have time and energy to pick up the camera and photograph my children, my husband, my pets. I haven’t really taken any true photos of my family since pursuing professional photography and I’m sad about that. So although I won’t be posting as many sessions here going forward, I still plan to post photos – the photos I’ll begin taking right away – from my life. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for birth sneak peeks. I’m booked for births through 2011 so there should be a nice steady stream of new family love to share!

Welcome to 2011! I’m so excited to begin this year with some big and exciting changes as my business grows and expands.

First,  I have officially launched my dedicated birth photography website: {FRESH} Birth Photography. Because birth photography is such a unique area of photography, I field a lot of questions that I felt my website couldn’t adequately address. Also as a self-professed birth “junkie” I often come across articles or news that I think to share but it seems inappropriate here so now I have a birth-centric place to share. I plan to interview local midwives, doctors, doulas and childbirth educators who I have worked with over on the birth blog, too. Fun stuff!

With the new year comes newly revamped pricing, packages and offerings. I’m focusing on building a maternity photography portfolio early this year in the hopes of expanding to this area of photography. So many of you have asked for maternity photographs and soon I’ll offer them alone and in combination with birth and newborn packages.

I’ve made some changes to my newborn photography sessions as well. My new sessions will focus more intimately on the newborn with less emphasis on family photos. Of course I will continue to offer family photo sessions as well and those can be scheduled to include your newborn as stand alone sessions or in conjunction with a scheduled newborn session. I think this will be far more efficient for all parties!

Finally I’m adding a baby’s first year plan called Baby Blocks. This plan will save you TONS of money on regular photo sessions throughout your baby’s first year of life. Every plan will include a print and at the end of the year, you will receive a beautiful heirloom quality coffee table book featuring favorite photos from all the sessions. As 16 years of my own children’s photos lay in boxes (and hard drives) due to my own never-ending optimism that I WILL scrapbook all those photos eventually….I sure wish I had a plan like this in place for each of my babies so at least they would be guaranteed a beautiful book of photos from their first year of life. Look for details soon on the Baby Blocks plan!

I can’t wait to help in creating your family’s  memories this year!

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day

October 15 is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day.  This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve walked through grief with friends whose children have been born still, who have suffered loss during pregnancy or shortly there after. So often friends and family don’t know what to say and so say nothing at all. For a family who has bonded with their sweet family member, they are changed forever. The experience of losing a child is felt on such a deep level and a family’s love for that child will always be strong. While it can be hard to know best how to navigate the emotional waters when a friend or family member loses a child, I believe every parent wants their child to be remembered in love. I think the worst thing we can do for those who have lost is to forget the life that was lost! On this day, we remember those precious souls no longer among us here on Earth.

For my fellow photographers, I want to use this as an opportunity to encourage you to consider volunteering your time with the amazing non-profit organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. If you have never heard of this organization, please click through on the link and read more about them. In short, it’s an organization that provides remembrance photography free of charge to families who are losing or who have lost infants during pregnancy, birth or shortly thereafter. While it may seem so painfully difficult to witness loss and grief as a photographer, imagine how impossibly painful it must be to be the family experiencing such a profound loss. While I’ve known people over the years who have regretted not having lovely or professional photos of their angel, I’ve never met a family who chose to arrange for photos and later regretted it! But during the loss, a family may be experiencing any or all of the stages of grief – they are in the LEAST appropriate emotional spot to be thinking ahead to what they may want or need down the line. Often a hospital nurse or staff member suggests the idea of NILMDTS services to a family who would have never considered the long term benefits of professional heirloom photos of their sweet child. This small act of compassion can change the way a family grieves and heals and can help  friends and acquaintances to remember this precious lost life.

NILMDTS offers several ways for people to volunteer their time:

1) For Photographers who have the skill and lighting equipment, please consider volunteering your time as an Affiliated Photographer.

2) For Photographers who may not yet have the skill or don’t currently own or have experience with artificial lighting, NILMDTS is in need of Assistant Photographer.

3) For those who possess qualified post-processing skills, consider volunteering to be a Digital Retouch Artist (DRA). This special volunteer position relieves the work of Affiliated Photographers so they can keep attending sessions without worrying about the time-consuming nature of retouching more visually challenging images.

4) For those who are not photographers but feel called to join in this amazing cause, consider becoming a Parent Coordinator.
