I love photography but even before photography was a passion of mine, I was an adoption advocate. My youngest child came to our family through adoption and I learned so much through the process. I saw the pain and struggle that families went through to bring a child home and I have seen children suffer in orphanages or wait in limbo in the foster care system under a system that tries its best but is often fraught with problems and is ineffectual, at best. I have been an active advocate for adoption reform over the years, trying to do my small part to make sure that all children without families to care for them find their way into loving arms

Along the way, I always felt pulled to connect my love for photography and the gift of adoption. About a year ago I connected with another photographer/adoptive Mom – Nicole Renee – and we started the wheels in motion to make something awesome. Fast forward a year and add two more photographers touched by adoption to our team (Jenna from Songbird Photography and Amy Leigh from Captured Simplicity) and I am super excited to finally announce:

Red Thread Sessions

Adoption Photography the Woodlands TX

Red Thread Sessions is a non-profit association joining together members of the adoption triad with volunteer photographers. Photographers offer their time and talent to take photos of the very brief and special transition time in the life of an adopted child. We offer three types of sessions: a family portrait session during the first three months after adoption, a family homecoming session for international adoptions and a birth session for open domestic adoptions. Some of our volunteers also offer open adoption sessions featuring birth and adoptive parents with their child – a true treasure for the child to carry into the future!

Please help me spread the word and share this new resource. We have hundreds of volunteer photographers located throughout the United States already donating their time. Let your agency know, tell your church family and share with your friends. Every family touched by adoption deserves a Red Thread Session!

Today I had a very long but totally awesome newborn session so not a lot of time to post my Gratitude Friday post. I still have a few hours before midnight, though, so here it is!

This week I’m grateful for rain and dew that used to appear in the mornings on the flowers and plants when there was rain and we weren’t under a drought-induced water restriction! This photo was taken at a maternity session for the baby I spent the day photographing today. You know…back a few months ago when it still rained in Texas! We have seen some HOT days and record-setting levels of dryness. Since I’ve moved to the Woodlands from Michigan I have never heard of actual wildfires in this area. In fact, last week when I saw a very stern and serious sign posted at the local park that said “Extreme Fire Risk” I actually laughed out loud. Turns out? Not so funny! In addition to  fires in other parts of Texas, there have been recent fires just a few cities over.and the count was at 63 reported fires in our county alone just over Monday and Tuesday of this week.  Thankfully the fires in the Woodlands have been limited in number and size but have included a small fire at our favorite local park.  But if the Woodlands really catches fire I fear the devastation that it would cause. So many houses interspersed with so many trees – beautiful tall old trees that have survived many hurricanes. The losses would be unbearable and immeasurable. So we are under a Drought Warning which means no firepits, no grilling this holiday weekend.

Rain. It ruins our sessions and causes us to reschedule. It ruins our family plans. But the lack of rain is so much worse. We forget to be grateful for it.

Inspired by the wonderful and amazing Emily Corey Photography I’m starting a new little photo project and I thought I’d share it here. Every Friday I’ll post a photo that is representative of something in my life I’m grateful for. If you have a blog or facebook page I encourage you to join in and spread the good spirit of gratitude!

He may not be the Easter Bunny or a sweet little lamb or chick but he represents Spring around The Woodlands. I was out enjoying the sun after several rainy days a few weeks ago when my cat spotted this guy (or girl?). I’ve never been freaked out by lizards or snakes. I think they are kind of fascinating. I’ve never seen a shedding lizard in my yard though! He reminded me of the newness of Spring. Rebirth. Second chances. And who amongst us can’t appreciate that?! And so I’m grateful for this guy. In case you’re wondering, he’s an Anole and I think I’ll call him Humphrey.
