I offer on-location natural light maternity sessions in the Woodlands, Texas and surrounded areas. A common question I get from my expecting Mommy clients is “What do I wear?”. My maternity clients  get a tips sheet when they book me and it outlines some suggestions for wardrobe.  Additionally I thought I’d put together this post for suggestions on some maternitywear and boutique items that are great for your maternity session.

What to wear:

  • Fitting tanks and tops.
  • Loose sleeved tops or light cardigan layered over tank if you have gained weight in your arms or if you are experiencing swelling during this late stage of pregnancy.
  • Jeans that no longer snap (pre-pregnancy) to accentuate your belly, if you can pull it off (I never could! I gained weight all over!)
  • Jeans or pants without a maternity band.
  • Shirts that no longer fit over your belly. This accentuates your belly’s size at this stage in pregnancy.
  • Dresses that are form fitting to accentuate your figure.
  • Long, flowey skirts paired with tanks or fitted tops are a lovely way to accentuate your tummy while staying comfortable and looking dreamy for your session. Especially a great choice if you are experiencing swelling late in pregnancy.
  • Solid colors. Stay away from loud or bold patterns. Some repeating simple patterns photograph very well such as small polka-dots or stripes.
  • If you are going for partial nudity, a large scarf makes a great “tube top” style top or a bottom if the scarf is large enough to be clipped or tied in back.
  • A well-fitting bra! This can really help your figure at

As a Mom of three boys I know just how challenging it can be to find really cute AND really photogenic boys clothing. The most challenging part is finding something simple enough for photographs that also reflects your boy’s style. A boy who lives in graphic tees isn’t going to feel right in a polo shirt or necktie. His discomfort will be evident in photos.

The same basic truths apply to boys as they do girls:

  • No logos or characters. NO GRAPHIC T-SHIRTS!!! Nothing dates a photo or makes it seem inappropriately casual!
  • No busy prints or big bold plaids. Madras is in style right now and is cute for shorts – not so much for shirts. The busy-ness distracts away from your child’s beautiful face.
  • When coordinating colors between family members focus on matching color “families” rather than colors themselves. Stick to one color family (brights, pastels, neutrals) but mix up the colors!
  • Alternatively stick with one color “theme” but vary the shade along the natural spectrum. Navy blue and light blue, for example.
  • Dress for your child’s skin tone. Pale skin can look ghostly when contrasted with very dark colors. Dark colors may not provide enough contrast with dark skin tones to really make your child’s face pop in a photo.
  • Layers are good.
  • Boys like to accessorize too! Funky or fun hats, a favorite watch or necklace, sunglasses, even his favorite teddy-bear can all personalize your photos and make your child more relaxed and at ease.
  • When it comes to shoes, don’t underestimate the awesomeness of bare feet! For boys, though, stay away from white tennis shoes and any color Crocs as they appear inappropriate casual.

I get asked often for clothing suggestions so I thought I’d put together this resource for clients preparing for their next session.

The most important thing you can do when choosing outfits for your child’s session is to consider your child’s personality. Your child will shine in clothing that she feels comfortable and natural wearing. A tomboy, no matter how sweet she might look,  isn’t going to feel comfortable in a frilly dress and her photos will reflect this. Likewise, a girly-girl will love feeling like a princess in a big pettiskirt or tutu and she’ll really put on a show during her session and that will also reflect in the finished product. So I like to offer suggestions based on personality and style preference rather than any hard and fast rules.

That said, there are some basic truths:

  • No logos or characters. Nothing dates a photo or makes it seem inappropriately casual!
  • No busy prints or big bold plaids.
  • Accessories that add color accents to otherwise neutral outfits (think scares, belts, hats, chunky jewelry, etc) are good.
  • When it comes to shoes, don’t underestimate the awesomeness of bare feet!
